In 1796 and 1797 The Hampshire Chronicle in Winchester carried a series of advertisements for Mrs Bennett's Boarding School. Many of them give an insight into Mrs Bennett's health, state of mind and abilities. Did Jane, inspired by the adverts, drop a 't' and base her comic character on this teacher?
